The Sound of Music: Cocoon
May 27th, 2008
Cocoon is a pretty group, which gives especially in the folk. Their first album is called All My Friend Died in a Plane Crash: I saw immediately a reference to the plane crash of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper a February 3, 1959, “The day the Music Died “, as Don McLean sang in” American Pie “(folk-bottomed) in the early 70. But not at all, you t’emballes my daughter, total disappointment… But what age do they have?
Morgan, the singer at a keyboard 19 years, and Mark, the singer ukulélé, a 22. They are young, cute, they sing pretty well (even if the voice of Morgan strangely recalls that of Babet, Dyonisos singer) and their songs are soft and sweet. So sweet that by the end of the concert I had a little nausea. You find yourself going even listen to them on their Myspace. Mark has an interesting voice, which may seem pinch (as they often french when they try to speak English with an accent that s’inventent), but very fair.
First, the texts… These two small french sing in English, ok, no problem, but if you try to bring you sooner you realize that the sentences did not really make sense… of course they are metaphors , “Second degree” see “the 10th degree,” naive compositions, as can be that group Indochina, but under anti-depressants and after a stay in Center Park. After a day’s work, exhausted, I really want to understand why this “climber” lost his toes and what it really means if I had to identify with him? I dropped, it is true that I wear too much interest in words…
The melody. It is rather nice, I love the ukulélé (my side “Some Like It Hot”), it is entrainante and it takes! But many of their songs are similar, but we have unveiled a title of their forthcoming album: I remember thinking very hard “nothing new, I did not buy.” Nevertheless, the title “Chupee” airs Israel Kamakawiwo’ole, but if you know, the singer who has taken “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” (extraordinary by the way!), The coup they managed to win me a smile and make me think of the holidays… I must give them at least that. For the rest, everything is slow and ethereal.
The scene… My God! Unfortunately there is a gap between the maturity of their music and short maturity. Let me explain: we were right I do not know how many jokes, ridicule, other artists (Christophe Mae should have ears that whistle…). Did they really need to get into a lather with their audiences down sharply singers of the moment? Is this really an adult? Are they good to point to claim a style and quality of music? I think that starts when it is better to be modest. And I do not speak glances lovers, anecdotes about their privacy (new dress, new haircut…): The concert is finally a scene more in their everyday life, and it is has understood.
Well, remain positive. It was still a concert nice (when you love music you appreciate always a small improvised concert, even if the group is not our preferred). The audience was mostly bobo (one would have doubted), therefore, no fights or smell of shit. I think Cocoon has touched some people (among those who do not understand English), on my side I expect they grow a little.
